Why Is Baby Shark So Popular?

Welcome back to What's Trending, Baby Shark started as a campfire song years ago, passed around in school or camp, but was not made into an actual published song accompanied by music. It did however make its way online in a 2007 YouTube video named Cliner High published by Alexandra Muller. And finally in 2015 it was made into an official recording.

A South Korean company called Pinkfong decided to produce the song and video to feature alongside its other educational content. Pinkfong's YouTube channel has more than 15 million subscribers and creates brightly colored videos to help children learn and interact with the cartoon Pinkfong, a prince from the planet Staria. Baby Shark was added to the channel in November of 2015 and the video of the original song has since gained over 115 million views. And the dance version of the song has over 2 billion views. It has even made its way onto the Billboard top 40 list.

However many people believe that a lot of the song's success came from popular Korean bands like Red Velvet, Girls Generation and Blackpink incorporating these songs into their concerts. The song made it big in the West in September 2018 when Ellen DeGeneres released her own version of the song. James Corden performed a version of the song and it was also featured on X Factor in early December 2018 because it was requested by Simon Cowell's 4-year-old son Eric.

Oh, Simon has a heart. And of course like with anything going viral it's spawned a viral challenge. The online dance craze or referred to as Baby Shark Challenge around the world was dubbed the next big thing after the domination of Gangnam style. People even combined Baby Shark with the Kiki challenge. But of course experts warned it's not safe to walk alongside a moving car.

Though I don't think you need to be an expert to know that. But not everyone was into the craze. On Reddit, Jase commented, Good Lord that Pinkfong channel is milking the crap out of the Baby Shark song. They have merch, they have dance remixes, competitions, they have actually become f-in-cancer. While it is pretty catchy, there's actually some signs behind why it's so popular.

And why we all can't get it out of our head. Do, do, do, do, do, do.

Grammy Award winner Imogen Heap lecture in developmental psychology cast for Addie Minn and music psychologist Lauren Stewart teamed up to find out why these songs make babies so happy. Baby's heart rates are much faster than ours. So they prefer harmonious up to tempo music. They also love the element of surprise. So pauses in the music, builds anticipation.

And of course babies love silly sounds. So do, do, do, do. Really goes a long way with them.

Baby Shark also lets everyone participate in it together. Which is why it has gone so viral. So what do you think? Let us know in the comments below and be sure to like and subscribe for more of what's trending. And for more stories, go to whatstrending.com.
